VIETNAMESE STICKY RICE CAKE (BANH CHUNG)

Occasionally, closing to Tet holiday which is a traditional event, all most Vietnamese citizens hurriedly prepare to cook sticky rice cakes (banh chung) for greeting the biggest holiday every single year.

Besides, peach flowers even Kumquat tree are unique things from our ancestors, sticky rice cakes also are must-have in a family on this holiday. At the last time, it seemed each family cooks by themselves, however it is busy life then we reduce the tasks for preparing Tet.

Nevertheless, there are still a lot of family to get this chance for connecting all members to pack and cook this kind of cakes which generate the strongly membership in each family.

Literally, the main ingredients of this traditional cake is sticky rice which is one of most important food to our ancient people. Hidden inside the sticky layer is the delicious filling made from mung bean and fatty pork. Traditionally, Banh Chung is wrapped in dong leaves which seems only having in Vietnam, after boiling, the smelling of this one to merge into the taste of cakes.

Honesty, we devour it that we could perceive the flavor of three ingredients even the scent of dong leaves wonderfully.

Moreover, there are 2 kinds of shape, square and long cakes which depend on the favorite of each family, basically the ingredients are the same.

All people in Vietnam, even kids are known about the original story of banh chung which tell together from this generation to next. Thus, beside the scent of this cake, it brings a meaningful tradition that we must prolong by heart.

Vietnamese Tet holiday

Each time spring comes, we are happy to celebrate 🎉 Tet holiday, normally it happens in the end of January or February according to the lunar calendar.

Although this year is a special case cause Corona virus, we still try to prepare some unique things in our holiday as flowers, sticky rice cake, fried spring rolls, and also buy something news to replace old ones. Tet holiday is also the occasion to express the respect and gratitude to our parents, our grandparents.

The traditional Tet festival lasts for three days. It is considered a time to begin new stuff, to discard the problems of the past year and start all over. People buy new clothes and often change jobs or switch careers. During the last week of the old year, they sweep away all the bad things that have accumulated in the previous 12 months with a thorough cleaning of their homes and gardens, especially including altars that honor gods and ancestors.

This festival is our biggest vacation yearly, we have 5-7 days to celebrate it with all members in our family and including our relatives, our friends, certainly all companies and restaurants, coffee shops close to allow their staffs go back their hometown.
